But she has bigger plans than simply exacting a bloody revenge against the hero. No, rather than tearing him limb from limb, she opts to play on Beowulf's largest flaw, his pride. She offers to make him the greatest king to ever live, but at what price…It goes on, obviously, but for those who don't know what happens next, this review will offer no spoilers. Other than the plot, which is a great one (hey, ten thousand English teachers can't be wrong), Beowulf is a fun ride for movie audiences of all ages. The animation is CGI at its finest, creating breathtaking settings and environments for the hero and his monstrous enemies to do battle in, and every character looking so real it's a little creepy. Speaking of creepy, the monsters that are offered up are top notch. One eyed sea creatures, fire breathing dragons, and of course, the Grendel, who looks like a giant that someone put in a microwave, covered in hideous, dripping wounds and a menacing broken fang filled, constantly drooling mouth. Though the film stays true to the original story in most facets, it does deviate here and there in order to utilize its fantastic CGI to create over the top scenes of action and adventure, especially in one involving an aerial battle scene pitting Beowulf against a vicious dragon. Unfortunately, the film's cohesion to the original text is a bit of a double edged sword, as those who know the story will know exactly what to expect, leaving very little up to chance. The film does, on the other hand, offer up an innovative method of telling the tale which will still be riveting, even to those who can recite the epic poem by memory.
