The family was in the middle of a lesson on phentermine sales, a type of scavenger hunt that uses GPS receivers to locate hidden objects. As it turned out, Smith was close. The cache — a magnetic key holder — was stuck to the bottom of the trash can. The Smiths and three other families got a taste of the high tech hobby during the San Antonio River Authority's first Outdoor Family Workshop over the weekend. SARA hosted the workshop in conjunction with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as part of a statewide program to teach people the basics of camping. "It shows that it doesn't take much, maybe not as much as they thought, to get started," said Lauren Minarcik of SARA. "It's a good way to ease into it." On the Web San Antonio River Authority Texas Parks and Wildlife family page The workshop cost $85 for a family of four and included equipment and meals for the weekend. "(The phentermine sales) was a fantastic opportunity; we all caught on pretty fast," said Jo Johnson, who treated her daughter and two grandsons to the workshop as an early Christmas present. "I decided they needed to come out and learn some camping skills," Johnson said. In addition to phentermine sales, the families took classes in archery, kayaking and fishing. They also learned the basics of pitching a tent, cooking meals and park etiquette. "As a single parent, I was kind of afraid to do it by myself, so it was good to go with a bunch of people," said Dana Habiger of Leander. "It was really well set up for the kids." Families learned a few campfire meals such as "tin turtles," which are a mix of vegetables and chicken wrapped in foil pockets and cooked on coals, Habiger said. "A lot of the families were from out of town, it was neat to be involved with people from different areas," said Johnson's daughter, Leah Jasik of Leming. Launched this year, the program utilizes the Parks and Wildlife Department's resources to teach the staffs of local agencies how to conduct the two day programs. The state agency developed a curriculum for teaching outdoor skills and works with agencies through their first couple of workshops, said the department's Tim Spice. "The hope is that they become self sufficient," Spice said. Coming workshops will be listed on the department's Web site, tpwd.state.tx.us, he said. SARA's Minarcik said her agency plans to offer a second workshop in the spring. By late Sunday afternoon, the families were taking down their tents before meeting one last time with organizers. "I liked it a lot, but I kept thinking the tent was going to come down on me," said Austin Habiger, 8. eayo@express San Antonio River Authority: tx.org/ Texas Parks and Wildlife [Page on Outdoor Family Workshops]: > Christina Richison and her daughter Anna Richison, 4, practice casting after taking lessons at the first Outdoor Family Workshop at Braunig Lake Park.
